Trust in quality assurance system base for automatic recognition of associate degrees and PhD’s in the Benelux

The five ministers responsible for higher education in the Benelux have signed an agreement on the automatic mutual recognition of the qualifications 'associate degree' and PhD in the Benelux. Since 2015 this agreement already existed for bachelor and master degrees sand is now being expanded. The Benelux is the only region in Europe where this automatic recognition is a fact. The Accreditation Organisation of the Netherlands and Flanders (NVAO) applauds this evolution.

This agreement guarantees every resident in the Benelux that the level of her/his 'associate degree' * or PhD will be automatically recognised in the other country. Complex, time-consuming and expensive recognition procedures are abolished.

The NVAO applauds this evolution. "Our organisation has always been one of the driving forces behind common quality standards at European level and automatic recognition of the level of higher education qualifications within the Benelux. The mutual trust of the Benelux countries in each others higher education and quality assurance systems forms the basis for automatic mutual recognition. We are proud that the efforts of NVAO have contributed to the removal of obstacles for those who want to study or work abroad", said Anne Flierman and Ann Verreth, Chair and Vice-Chair of NVAO.

* in Flanders, these programmes are also known as graduate or HBO5 programmes
