In the Netherlands, NVAO assesses the internal quality assurance pursued by universities (research universities and universities of applied sciences), and the quality of the programmes they provide.
The Minister of Education, Culture and Science has conducted discussions with NVAO, the Education Inspectorate, institutions, students, and other stakeholders about the future accreditation system. A steering group, in which NVAO was also represented, has developed recommendations for optimising the current system and conducting pilots for the accreditation of institutions.
The recommendations of the steering group have been incorporated in the Minister’s Strategic Agenda for Higher Education, which was published in July 2015. In 2016, the House of Representatives discussed the proposals. The new Assessment Framework for the Higher Education Accreditation System of the Netherlands has been in force since 1 January 2017. The new law of the Minister (in Dutch: Wet accreditatie op maat) is treated by the House of Representatives in the autumn of 2017.
