In the Netherlands, NVAO assesses the internal quality assurance pursued by universities (research universities and universities of applied sciences), and the quality of the programmes they provide.
The Minister of Education, Culture and Science has conducted discussions with NVAO, the Education Inspectorate, institutions, students, and other stakeholders about the future accreditation system. A steering group, in which NVAO was also represented, has developed recommendations for optimising the current system and conducting pilots for the accreditation of institutions.
The recommendations of the steering group have been incorporated in the Minister’s Strategic Agenda for Higher Education, which was published in July 2015. The Assessment Framework for the Higher Education Accreditation System of the Netherlands 2016 (Framework 2016) is in force since 1 January 2017. After entry into force of the Law 'Accreditatie op maat' from February 1, 2019 and the approval of the concept-Assessment Framework for the Higher Education Accreditation System of the Netherlands 2018 (Framework 2018) the Framework 2018 is in force.
